Del Mar Coastal Connections

Del Mar, CA Community

Del Mar is a beautiful community where neighbors look out for each other! We’re fortunate to have many dedicated organizations working to make our town even better, and a significant part of that effort focuses on supporting our brave veterans. These individuals have given so much, and finding ways to give back is a rewarding experience for everyone involved. In Del Mar, there are several fantastic groups dedicated to this cause, each with its own unique approach to making a difference in the lives of those who have served.

These local heroes are committed to providing vital resources and support to veterans transitioning back to civilian life, or those who simply need a helping hand. By volunteering your time or donating to these causes, you become an integral part of a compassionate network that acknowledges and honors the sacrifices our veterans have made. It’s a wonderful way to strengthen our community bonds and ensure that those who have protected us feel valued and supported right here at home.

One of the most heartwarming volunteer opportunities for veterans in the region is through The Elizabeth Hospice’s Veteran Volunteer Program. Volunteers with prior military experience—either active duty or retired—bring a special sense of empathy and understanding to fellow veterans receiving hospice care. These veteran volunteers provide emotional support, companionship, and comfort to patients who have served our nation, creating meaningful connections that greatly enhance the quality of life for those in their final days.

The Elizabeth Hospice ensures every volunteer feels confident and prepared. Each participant receives comprehensive training and ongoing support from dedicated volunteer coordinators, including guidance from Volunteer Manager Claytie Mason. Volunteers often say they gain far more than they give. From meeting new people to learning new skills and supporting the local community, the rewards are rich and lasting. For anyone interested in learning more about becoming a veteran volunteer, you can call 760.705.6736 or email volunteer@ehospice.org for more information. You can help make sure every veteran receives the respect, care, and companionship they deserve.

Among the many heartwarming stories from The Elizabeth Hospice is the friendship between Rigo and Susan, two volunteers whose kindness and empathy shine through their work. Their example shows how small acts of compassion, like listening, sharing stories, and offering time, can bring peace and connection in moments that matter most.

Del Mar residents can also support veterans through the Shelter to Soldier program, a local nonprofit with an inspiring mission that connects rescued dogs with veterans in need. This organization carefully adopts dogs from shelters, trains them to become certified psychiatric service animals, and pairs them with veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress, traumatic brain injuries, or other challenges faced after service. It’s a beautiful partnership that saves two lives at once: the dog and the veteran.

One of the standout events that brings our community together for a great cause is the “Salute to Paws 5K & Gratitude Festival.” This event, organized by Shelter to Soldier, is a fantastic opportunity to get active and show your appreciation for veterans. You can participate by running or walking the 5K, or simply enjoy the festive atmosphere of the Gratitude Festival. It’s a family-friendly day packed with activities, food, and fun, all while raising crucial funds for a meaningful mission.

If you’re inspired to get more involved, Shelter to Soldier welcomes volunteers throughout the year. In addition to the 5K, they host several signature events, including a Golf Tournament in April and a Be the Light Gala in August, both of which raise critical funds for their mission. You can easily fill out their volunteer interest form to share your skills and availability. From event planning to dog handling, every volunteer plays a role in transforming lives.

You can also help amplify Shelter to Soldier’s message through their Facebook fundraisers. Hosting a birthday or milestone celebration fundraiser is a simple but effective way to support the organization and involve your social network in making a difference. The funds raised through these online efforts directly cover food, training, medical care, and other essentials for service dogs in training. It’s a modern, easy way to give back while raising awareness for a truly meaningful cause.

Both The Elizabeth Hospice and Shelter to Soldier reflect the best of what Del Mar has to offer: compassion, connection, and community service. Whether you’re sharing time with a veteran in need of comfort or helping provide a loyal companion for a hero adjusting to civilian life, every contribution adds up to something greater. These programs remind us that honoring veterans isn’t just something we do once a year; it’s a commitment we uphold every day through care, service, and gratitude.
