Del Mar Coastal Connections

Del Mar, CA Community

Spring is officially here, and Del Mar is ready to remind you what warm weather in San Diego’s North County actually feels like. The sun is sticking around longer, the ocean air is doing its thing, and this beach city has more going on than most people give it credit for. Here’s where to start.

Sand, Sun, and (Finally) No Excuses

Del Mar Beach is routinely ranked among California’s best, and right now is the ideal window to visit before the summer crowds take over. The water is warming up, the mornings are clear, and the atmosphere is as easy as it gets. Dog owners get an added perk: Del Mar Dog Beach offers dedicated off-leash access along a stretch of coastline your pup will not stop talking about. Bring a towel, leave the agenda at home, and just show up.

Powerhouse Park Deserves More Credit

Right at the end of 15th Street, Powerhouse Park is one of those spots locals gravitate toward without making a big deal about it. Wide grassy areas, BBQ spots, picnic tables, and a direct path down to the beach make it a solid and straightforward option for families and solo visitors alike. There is a full playground for kids and a doggie water fountain on site, because Del Mar clearly has its priorities straight.

  • Watch for dolphins from the bluff overlooking the water

  • Direct beach access right from the park

  • Free street parking near Camino Del Mar and 11th Street

Two Restaurants, One Beach

California has very few restaurants that actually sit on the sand. Del Mar has two of them. Jake’s Del Mar serves fresh, seasonal seafood and New American dishes right on the beach, while Poseidon on the Beach keeps things casual with the same unbeatable ocean backdrop. Early spring is the sweet spot for snagging an outdoor table before the season heats up. Both have been Del Mar dining staples for decades.

The Farmers Market Is Worth Your Saturday

The Del Mar Farmers Market runs every Saturday from 12:00 to 4:00 PM at the Civic Center at 1050 Camino Del Mar. Certified local farmers sell fresh seasonal produce directly to shoppers, with food vendors and artisans rounding out the market. Spring is when the produce selection really starts to pick up, and a sunny afternoon here has a way of turning into a full day out without much planning. Walk through Del Mar Village before or after, and you are set.

Looking for more local guides and things to do around Del Mar throughout the year? I keep a growing collection of articles at Del Mar Coastal Connections covering local spots, seasonal events, and business spotlights worth checking out.

Get on the Water Before Summer

Spring mornings on the San Dieguito Lagoon are calm, clear, and well-suited for getting out on the water. Paddleboarding and kayaking are both popular options, with guided nature paddles offering a chance to spot sea lions and migratory birds along the way. If surfing is more your speed, Del Mar Surf School offers lessons for all skill levels directly on the beach.

  • The Coast to Crest Trail runs through both the lagoon and coastal bluff areas for a full scenic loop

  • Bike rentals near the beach make the trail easy to access without a car

Hike Torrey Pines Before It Gets Crowded

A short drive south puts you at Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve, where sandstone cliffs drop into the Pacific and trails cut through one of the rarest pine tree habitats in the country. Late March is peak wildflower season here, and the weather is still cool enough to actually enjoy a longer hike. Go early, bring water, and give yourself more time than you think you need.

Del Mar is at its best right now, before the summer rush arrives and the pace picks up. These spots give you a solid start on spring, from a farmers market on Saturday to a morning hike with ocean views. Pick one and make a day out of it.
