The Hollywood glamour-themed CARMAthon 2025 made a powerful impact at Del Mar Racetrack this past weekend, raising an impressive $198,000 for Thoroughbred aftercare programs across California. The annual fundraiser, featuring the campaign theme “CARMAthon: New Beginnings,” transformed the racetrack into a red-carpet affair dedicated to supporting retired racehorses. FanDuel TV’s partnership played a crucial role in the event’s success, providing nationwide broadcast coverage throughout the day and creating exclusive video features highlighting the importance of aftercare initiatives.

The remarkable community response to CARMAthon 2025 reflects a growing commitment to responsible Thoroughbred retirement within the racing industry. With contributions from prominent supporters, including Bill & Margie Strauss, Bob & Jill Baffert, Del Mar, the Oak Tree Foundation, and numerous others, the event demonstrated how collective action can make a significant difference. This fundraiser represents just one facet of CARMA’s ongoing work, which has awarded over $6.4 million in grants since its founding and directly transitioned more than 500 Thoroughbreds to second careers through its Placement Program.

CARMA’s extensive network of support has created a safety net for retired racehorses throughout California. The organization’s track record shows the power of coordinated community efforts, with thousands of Thoroughbreds benefiting from CARMA-vetted aftercare programs. Beyond the immediate financial impact, CARMAthon 2025 strengthened the bonds between racing enthusiasts, industry professionals, and animal welfare advocates who share a common goal of ensuring dignified retirements for these athletes.

The success of this year’s event wasn’t measured solely in dollars raised but also in awareness generated. The partnership with FanDuel TV amplified CARMA’s message to racing fans nationwide, educating viewers about the critical importance of aftercare infrastructure. This broader exposure helps build sustainable support systems that extend well beyond a single fundraising event, creating lasting change in how the industry approaches retirement planning for its equine athletes.

Billy Koch, CARMA President and Founder/Managing Partner of Little Red Feather Racing, emphasized the deeper purpose behind the fundraiser: “CARMAthon isn’t just about raising money. It is about building awareness and industry commitment to what happens to these incredible athletes after they leave the track. Aftercare should never be an afterthought.” His words highlight a fundamental shift in racing culture, where responsible retirement planning is increasingly viewed as an essential obligation rather than an optional consideration.

The funds raised through CARMAthon will directly support more than 20 Aftercare Charity Partners who provide vital services, including retraining, medical care, and safe placement for retired racehorses. These organizations form a crucial network that ensures Thoroughbreds can transition successfully to new careers or comfortable retirements. While CARMAthon represents a significant annual boost to these efforts, CARMA accepts donations year-round through their website at carma4horses.org, allowing supporters to contribute whenever they’re able.
